Up until last month, I had no idea that a "word of the year" was even a thing. Coming up on the new year, it's common for people to list out resolutions to make, including habits they wish to break, places they like to visit or things they want to improve. While I have created new year goals in the past, I've never really been good about sticking to them and that frustrated me. I love creating goals for myself, but I wanted something that wasn't focused on change just for the new year. The idea of having a word of the year creates a single theme that you want your life to encompass throughout the next 365 days. One single word... not a list of (let's face it) often unlikely things that are easy to give up on. So, I decided I would give this a try. I wanted this word to be meaningful and achievable. A theme that would be encouraging and positive. After a couple weeks of contemplation, I came up with the word, "intention." While it wasn't the first thing that came to my mind, it was the one that stuck with me the most. Why I chose "intention" I want to live out the next year (and the rest of my life) speaking intentionally, thinking intentionally, and acting intentionally. And by this I mean, doing things that intend to first, benefit others, and second benefit myself, even if doing those things is not easy. It means living based on my personal values of love, compassion, and humility and doing my best to abide by those always. In 2018, I want to aim to do the things that are important, positive and beneficial, while simply forgetting the rest. INTENTIONAL LIVING IS ABOUT KNOWING WHY YOU DO WHAT YOU DO AND WHY YOU DON’T DO WHAT YOU DON’T DO. -Mandi ehmam We live in a society where it's easy to go, go, go and do, do, do without stopping to think about whether or not what were doing is positive or necessary. Being able to live with intention is giving yourself time to stop and analyze your decisions. It also considers inviting in truthful constructive criticism and applying the things that will make you better.
Like I mentioned, finding a "word of the year" isn't about living a certain way only through 2018, it's about finding a theme that can be applied the rest of your life as well. What do you think about having a word of the year? Let me know in the comments! Happy New Year xoxo
